Opportunity Information: Apply for 20180719 PW
The Humanities Collections and Reference Resources (HCRR) grant opportunity, offered by the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), funds projects that help preserve and expand access to materials that are central to research, teaching, and public humanities programs. The program is aimed at strengthening the behind-the-scenes infrastructure that makes humanities scholarship possible, especially the stewardship of collections held by libraries, archives, museums, and historical organizations. These collections can include books and manuscripts, photographs, audio recordings and film or video, archaeological and ethnographic holdings, works of art and other material culture, as well as born-digital and digitized objects. A major emphasis is extending the usable life of these materials while also making their intellectual content easier for scholars, students, and the public to find and use, often by applying digital tools and methods.
In addition to supporting collections work, HCRR also funds the creation of reference resources that help people navigate and interpret cultural materials. These reference resources can range from practical tools meant to deliver reliable information quickly to more advanced resources that organize, synthesize, or standardize knowledge in a way that enables deeper investigation of a topic. In effect, the program supports both the preservation and accessibility of humanities content and the development of discovery and research tools that make that content more usable.
HCRR provides two main award tracks. The first is for implementation projects, which are typically more advanced efforts focused on carrying out established plans, workflows, or methodologies to preserve materials and/or deliver broad access to them. The second track is for planning, assessment, and pilot work, referred to as HCRR Foundations awards, which support earlier-stage activities such as evaluating needs, testing approaches, running pilots, or developing concrete plans that can later be scaled into full implementation.
The opportunity is a discretionary grant program in the humanities (CFDA 45.149). Eligible applicants include state, county, and city or township governments; special district governments; public and state-controlled institutions of higher education; private institutions of higher education; federally recognized Native American tribal governments; and nonprofit organizations with 501(c)(3) status (excluding higher education institutions in that nonprofit category, since colleges and universities are listed separately).
